OAGC's Sky's No Limit! Story Making Workshop
Tēnā koutou,
On 28 May, writer, tutor and parent Alice Bartlett is running a workshop for story making experiments.
Te Wai o Rabuvai, the harbour and historic Peninsula Beach Rd (a.k.a. Back Beach in Kōpūtai/Port Chalmers) will spark off this 'experientialment', using the turn of the tide and other experiences in the natural/humanmade environment. Writers and artmakers can get gentle jumpstarts for their creating, or just dive straight into whatever they are inspired to do, in warm, no-pressure, likeminded company, working on whatever they're already into while using the turn of the tide and other experiences in the natural/humanmade environment.
This activity is envisaged as best for children of late primary to intermediate age (9-12yrs).
We'll meet at the Port Chalmers Yacht Club carpark at 10.30am. After exploring weirdly wonderful marine life on an 'island' submerged twice a day, then watching the tide's turning, we'll return and regroup at the Port Chalmers Library's toasty Rolfe Room, have a quick hot drink and lunch and then write or draw using our experience - either as a launch pad or as filter/infestation/animation etc. of an idea/project we're already cooking up. Discover or invent; this is the time for playful voyage to wherever Back Beach takes your experiment.
Parents are welcome to head out at this point for a cafe catch up on Port's main street, returning to the Library for pickup at 2.00pm.
Alice Bartlett (M.A. English lit, Auckland) is a tour guide at Orokonui Ecosanctuary with extensive tutoring/teaching/group facilitation experience, including assistance with intermediate pupils' extension programme classes (Kaikorai Valley College). She has written for multimedia film/stage performance and is currently luxuriating in her own children's fiction project, with the odd bit of field research on her eleven-year-old's library books after she's gone to bed.
If your child is interested in this event, please email Cherie at [email protected] to register your interest. Any questions can also be sent to Cherie.
Meeting Place: Carpark next to the Port Chalmers Yacht Club on Peninsula Road, a.k.a Back Beach Rd (please note that there are no public toilet available here). Collection of children after the workshop is from the Port Chalmers Library Rolfe Room (entrance on the right, just in from the Library foyer, 20 Beach Road).
What To Bring: Water bottle, packed lunch, writing/art materials ( some backup materials will be available), earplugs if you need silence to write/draw, adventuring-gear (the marine area of Back Beach that we’ll be exploring can be very exposed so warm layers and waterproof gear depending on the weather) and sturdy warm footwear that's ok to get a little wet as we meander the silky-silty estuary and the kilometre or so back to the Rolfe Room).
Directions for anyone new to Back Beach:
Kōpūtai-Port Chalmers is around 13 km from Ōtepoti-Dunedin via state highway 88. If arriving from the north, turn off State Highway 1 at Waitati and come over the hill via Blueskin Road. Once in Kōpūtai, turn right at the north end of the main street, past the Maritime Museum (ex Post Office) and cross the railway lines by the historic Port Chalmers Tunnel Hotel. Then along Beach Street past the log storage area, around Observation Point until you come to the public carpark and launching ramp. The yacht clubhouse is adjacent to the carpark. Rail traffic shares one lane of the road around Observation Point, so if they're shunting (pretty uncommon) you may have to wait a few minutes. There are signs and lights to warn of shunting activity.
